Let’s get real about transforming your life, one small habit at a time!

Today, I had the pleasure of diving into a conversation about habit change with expert Kathleen Klug, a seasoned health educator, wellness coach, and author of the book Start With One. Kathleen’s insights into behavior change, self-compassion, and the power of starting with one simple step have left me feeling inspired and ready to take action! Let’s unpack the wisdom she shared and discover how small, consistent actions can lead to massive changes in your life.

Embracing Self-Compassion in Behavior Change

One of the most profound takeaways from our conversation with Kathleen was the importance of self-compassion in the journey of behavior change. Here are three key points to remember:

  • Recognize the Complexity: Acknowledge that changing behavior is a complex process that involves unraveling years of conditioning and habits.
  • Be Kind to Yourself: Approach your journey with kindness and patience, understanding that setbacks are a natural part of growth that we can learn from.
  • Celebrate Small Wins: Each step forward, no matter how small, is a victory worth celebrating. It builds trust in yourself and your ability to change.

The Power of Keeping Your Word

You might have noticed that sometimes you promise yourself to make a change or start a new habit, but you don’t always stick with it. It’s normal! But when it happens too often, we start to doubt our own intentions.

Kathleen emphasized the significance of honoring your word, not just to others, but to yourself. Here’s how you can apply this principle:

  • Start small: Choose habits that feel achievable and easy to maintain. Those little wins add up and help you trust yourself more.
  • Build Integrity: When you say you’re gonna do something, take a page from Mel Robbins’ book and count down from 5,4,3,2,1 and just do it! Each time you follow through on a promise to yourself, you strengthen your personal integrity.
  • Forgive & Move On: As you build trust in your word, you’ll find it easier to commit to larger goals and changes. If you slip up, don’t beat yourself up. Accept it, learn from it, and keep moving forward.

When you start believing in your ability to make changes and build healthy habits, that’s when the magic happens. It’s like a ripple effect – the more you trust yourself, the more you’ll see the power you have to transform your life. And that, my friend, is a game-changer!

Integrate Body, Mind, and Spirit

Integrative wellness is about achieving harmony and balance in all dimensions – not just what we can see on the surface. Kathleen shared her insights on how to cultivate this holistic approach:

  • Nourish All Aspects: Just like it’s important to be aware of what food we are putting into our body, we also must pay attention to the information and experiences we are digesting too. It all has an affect our overall well-being; mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
  • Seek Harmony: While balance is not always achievable, it’s important to pay attention in all areas of life to ensure we’re not letting ourselves become depleted in one area as we strive in another. For example, if you’re kicking big goals in your career right now, ensure you have some daily actions that refill your cup in relationships and health. If you’re not ending your day in a happy home, or providing the right fuel and recovery for your body, you career growth will not only be limited, but likely unsustainable. Focusing on one area while neglecting others won’t lead to true wellness.
  • Backing Off Isn’t Slacking Off: Remember that rest and recovery is essential to have sustained energy and resillience for achieving the big goals. Honour where you are at on any given day, and give yourself permission to take time to rest and restore.

Kathleen’s message is the light of hope for anyone feeling stuck in a cycle of self-doubt and unhealthy habits. By starting with one simple action, honoring our word, and embracing an integrative approach to wellness, we can reclaim control over our lives and a positive state of being. Remember, it’s the small, consistent steps that lead to monumental change.

I encourage you to take a moment today to set one small, achievable goal for yourself. Whether it’s drinking an extra glass of water, taking a five-minute walk, or simply standing up from your desk every hour, let this be the start of your journey to wellness.
