Today, I’m bringing you a conversation that is so powerful —one about embracing every part of yourself. In this episode, I chat with the incredible Bek Antonucci, a woman who has truly mastered the art of self-acceptance through her personal journey battling the internal demons of living with a highly stigmatised virus. She teaches us the importance of embracing all parts of ourselves, even the ones we might feel ashamed of.

Bek shares about overcoming bullying, relationship trauma, disordered eating, the herpes virus, and the healing power of self-love and acceptance. Trust me, this conversation is one you’ll want to listen to.

The Journey to Self-Acceptance

Bek’s journey to self-acceptance wasn’t easy, but it was transformative. Her story is one of resilience, healing, and learning to love herself, despite the challenges and stigma she faced. From being bullied as a teenager to facing the trauma of being in an abusive relationship, Bek spent years running from her pain. At one point, she even turned to disordered eating, thinking that changing her appearance would make her more “acceptable” to the world.

It wasn’t until she was in her mid-20s and faced the emotional devastation of receiving a herpes diagnosis that everything began to shift. She realized that to heal, she needed to accept all parts of herself—something she hadn’t been able to do up until that point.

Lessons from the Journey

As Bek so powerfully shared, when we resist parts of ourselves, when we try to push them away or hide them, they only become more prominent in our lives. The key to healing is acceptance—not of just the parts we love, but also the parts we struggle with, the parts we deem unworthy of love or recognition.

Here are some of the major takeaways from my conversation with Bek:

  1. You Are Not Your Trauma: Bek shared how deeply the bullying she experienced as a teenager shaped her beliefs about herself for many years. But trauma doesn’t define us—it can be a lesson that leads us toward self-discovery and acceptance.
  2. Healing Starts from Within: We often look outside ourselves for validation—through relationships, careers, appearance—but true healing comes from within. The moment Bek realized that her worthiness didn’t depend on external validation, her life began to shift.
  3. Find the Courage to Be Vulnerable: Bek’s decision to publicly share her herpes diagnosis was a turning point in her life. It was through this vulnerability that she found true self-acceptance. She encourages all of us to embrace our authenticity, no matter how uncomfortable it may feel at first.
  4. The Power of Community: No one heals in isolation. Bek spoke about the importance of community and how being seen and heard, especially as women, can lead to powerful healing. When we share our stories, we create space for others to do the same.
  5. You’re Not Alone: One of the most powerful lessons Bek shared is that we are not alone in our struggles. Whether it’s dealing with body image issues, shame, or difficult life experiences, someone out there can relate. When we open up, we find solidarity and strength.

The Power of Owning Your Story

A huge part of Bek’s healing process was learning to own her story. She didn’t just accept the herpes virus as part of her—it became a key element in her transformation. She shared how, for six years, she hid this part of herself out of shame. But when she decided to step into her truth, everything changed. Her relationships, her business, and her life all began to fall into place.

It’s a reminder that when we own our story, it no longer controls us. Instead, we transform it into a source of strength and empowerment.

So, How Can You Start Your Journey Toward Self-Acceptance?

Whether you’re dealing with a stigmatized diagnosis like Bek or simply struggling with feelings of unworthiness, the path toward self-acceptance starts with you. Here’s how you can begin:

  1. Acknowledge the Pain: Don’t ignore the parts of yourself that cause pain or discomfort. The first step toward healing is acknowledging these parts without judgment.
  2. Speak Your Truth: Whether it’s to a friend, a partner, or even in a journal, giving voice to your fears and insecurities can help release their power over you.
  3. Surround Yourself with Supportive People: Healing isn’t a solo journey. Find people who will support you, see you, and love you for who you are, not just what you’ve been through.
  4. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Understand that healing takes time, and it’s okay to not have all the answers. Treat yourself with the same love and care that you would offer a close friend.

Conclusion

As we wrapped up our conversation, Bek reminded us that the process of owning our story and accepting ourselves is ongoing. It’s a journey, not a destination. But it’s also the most important work we’ll ever do. If you’re struggling to accept parts of yourself—whether it’s your body, your story, or your past—know that you are not alone. There is so much power in owning your story, and when you do, everything in your life will start to shift in alignment with your authentic self.
